Centerpiece and Cake Decoration Techniques: Week 1 and 2! : )

Alrighty...STILL on lockdown and STILL bored. Haha...better catch up while I can!
So, a few exciting updates:
1. I GOT AN EXTERNSHIP! It is official, paperwork and all! It is at a place called Oishii Boston. One of my classmates gave me the contact because it is his uncle's business. It is super fancy and seems to be just what I want to focus on for now. I went in on Wednesday last week and again this week and played with chocolate and liquid nitrogen and helped plate some fancy desserts! It was so much fun! : ) I start May 20 after my current class.
2. I started the cake decorating class! AHHHH! The good news is it is fun but the bad news is that I am almost done. DONE. Gone from Le Cordon Bleu Boston forever and that makes me extremely sad. I love going to school and I have the funnest time with all my classmates. I am going to be a wreck the last day of classes. : ( BUT until then I will try to pack in as much fun as I can.

So, here is my first cake!

Children's Birthday Cake
CINDERELLA

Now, anyone who knows me would know my obvious choice would be The Lion King but Brai wanted me to do her childhood favorite and once I got thinking about it I started coming up with all sorts of cute idears. So...here she is! : )

The figures, thread spools, measuring tape, blue beads, thimble, and buttons are made out of marzipan (which is almond paste, powdered sugar, and corn syrup). The bow, scissors, and needles are made out of pastillage (which, for this recipe, is made of gelatin, powdered sugar, and vinegar). The floor board is also made of pastillage and is painted with cocoa butter and cocoa powder. The cake is a chiffon cake frosted with swiss buttercream.

I am really excited because next week I am going to transfer all my little decorations to a fondant covered cake dummie and put my cake in the display case at my school! You know whose idea that was? Chef Rebecca's (Chef Rebecca is like the cake pro at our school)! Anyway, it made me really happy and I can't wait to see it displayed! : ) : ) : )

Oh and also when I went up for grading Chef G tried to take away a point for my cocoa painting because it wasn't standing up on the cake...so I reminded him that I got his permission to do it that way. But he still wrote 19/20 so I said "uhhh then why you takin away points!?" and he said don't worry...then wrote 100 at the bottom! Haha...then he said, "It all evens out because I gave you 2 extra points for creativity....I should have given you 5, no, 10 extra points for creativity." Woo woo! I was so happy he liked it! Then he told me he wanted me to enter it into a cake challenge that is happening this October...but I think I am saving some other ideas I have for that, but we'll see!

Here are all my classmates cakes too! : ) It is so fun to see everybody's different ideas!
